Meet Chuck

I’m a Tampa-based freelance reporter and digital content creator specializing in business, community, and human-interest stories. My work spotlights the people and stories shaping Tampa Bay’s economy, culture, and identity.

My reporting has appeared in:
Business Observer – regional business trends and profiles of high-impact entrepreneurs.
Tampa Beacon – community reporting, local politics, and economic development coverage.
FOX 13 News – broadcast segments and digital features.
Creative Loafing – arts, culture, and local business spotlights.
WFLA – breaking news and enterprise reporting.

I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Tampa, where I served as Editor-in-Chief of The Minaret, the university’s award-winning student newspaper.

In addition to reporting, I bring experience in communications and media relations from roles with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ communications team and BoardroomPR, where I refined my skills in brand storytelling, content strategy, and cross-platform audience engagement.

Dr. David Wheeler standing against a brick wall in a blue suit, smiling with hands in pockets.

As the adviser for the University of Tampa's student newspaper, The Minaret, I've had the great pleasure of working with Chuck Merlis as editor-in-chief.

Under Chuck's leadership, Minaret traffic increased by 6,000 percent. You read that correctly – six THOUSAND percent.

He has overseen a renaissance of interest in the student paper, established more print editions, created new roles at the paper that hadn't existed before (such as social activities director), and, in general, has dedicated himself to excellence in journalism.

I give Chuck my highest recommendation.
